| "St. Louis is still the greatest baseball town in the
world." –Robert Hedges, owner, St. Louis Browns, 1902-1915.
The year 1901 began the Modern Era in baseball, with legendary players
and historical moments, changing the way baseball would be played in the
years to come. An inside look at early twentieth century baseball in St.
Louis is told by biographical stories that accommodate the rare photographs
of players such as “Cool Papa” Bell, “Sunny Jim”
Bottomley, Mordecai “Three-Finger” Brown, Roger Bresnahan,
Miller Huggins, Slim Sallee, Urban Shocker, and Rube Waddell.
Beyond the candid photographs, remarkable stories and significant facts
help define St. Louis' baseball culture. The city was a key battleground
in the rise of the American and Negro Leagues and the ill-fated Federal
League. This was an era when the Browns were a better and more popular
team than the Cardinals. Helene Britton, known in the press as “Lady
Bee,” was the first female owner of a major sports franchise. Owning
the Cardinals from 1911-1916, her story proves to be one of the many unknown
breakthrough pieces of St. Louis baseball history.
