Future Pitching Greats of the New York Yankees of the 1920's
This
is a remarkable picture from The Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs
Division, Bain Collection. It shows a group of Philadelphia Athletics
at the height of the team’s power, at the start of the 1914 season.
Connie Mack’s Athletics had won the 1910, 1911, and 1913 World Series,
with a combined record of 12-4. They would go on to capture another American
League pennant this season.
The names of the players are listed above on the photo. They include
three young pitchers who would go on to anchor the pitching staffs of
the great Yankee teams of the 1920s. They are:
Herb Pennock (here at age 22, second from left)
He would win 162 games for the Yankees from 1923 to 1933.
Joe Bush (here at age 21, fourth from the left)
He would win 62 games for the Yankees from 1922 to 1924.
Bob Shawkey (here at age 23, fifth from the left)
He would win 168 games for the Yankees from 1915 to 1927. |
